Course Description

This 4-session course tells the story of the magisterial centerpiece of classical music, the symphony. Developed, refined and expanded over two centuries, virtually every major composer felt the need to meet its challenge…and change its course. From its modest beginnings with early Haydn and Mozart through the heroic powerhouses of Beethoven to the overwhelming titans of Mahler and Bruckner to the passionate works of Tchaikovsky and the cool elegance of Sibelius, you'll learn and hear how and why the themes, techniques, forms and logic of the symphony truly form the beating heart of classical music.
