This course is the first step for students of Arabic after learning of the alphabet, basic phrases, and sentences. Prerequisite: Alif Baa, Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds, Third Edition, Georgetown University Press, or its equivalent (30 instruction hours). We will work on developing further the four communication skills (speaking, reading, listening, and writing) in Arabic, adding themes related to daily life orally and in writing. The class is interactive where the instructor is a facilitator to learning, encouraging students' participation and involvement in their learning process. The class book is Al-Kitaab Textbook for Beginning Arabic, Part One, Third Edition, Georgetown University Press - lessons one and two. The book can be rented or purchased on VitalSource.com. Purchasing the book is OPTIONAL. The instructor will provide copies of the first two lessons for those who need them. Other resources will be used as well to practice speaking in the Levantine dialect. There will be two extra OPTIONAL in-person meetings the fourth and seventh week of the class in a public place, to practice what we have learned in class or to respond to students' inquiries (a total of two extra hours). Aida Haddad

Aida graduated from the American University of Beirut with a degree in Arabic literature and a Teaching Diploma. She taught Arabic as a native and foreign language in Lebanon, Greece and the US.Aida published her short stories and translations in various outlets (Annahar, Alhayat newspapers, Ghurba magazine, Cultural Studies Quarterly, Al-hakawati, Almukhtar, Mitra, World Bank blogs and others). Together with Mishka Mojabber Mourani, she co-authored a bilingual book of poems, “Alone Together”, and a short story “Hiatus” published in Lunch Ticket literary magazine, Fall 2019. Aida started teaching at Arlington Community Learning in 2018.
